DALI

Happy New Year! I hope you all took some time to recharge over the holidays and are back with a renewed sense of purpose. I’ve been thinking about this quote, envisioning the things that I want to have happen in 2019:

“When you show up and keep putting your work out there, good things start to happen. You make new connections, people reach out to you, opportunities start to present themselves.” - Ayodeji Awosika

Like you, I’m always on the lookout for new leadership insights, best practices, and inspiration. I seek out resources, articles, and examples to motivate staff and help focus my team around shared goals. The educator in me wants to pass along content I find compelling, thought-provoking — and sometimes just intriguing.

Starting today and continuing every other Friday, I will share with you what I’ve found and what’s got me thinking. My hope is this communication becomes more of an open dialogue. I encourage you to share resources you think fellow superintendents would appreciate. Please email them to me at robert.avossa@lrp.com and I will look to include what is shared in a future email.
Here are some top of mind items I hope you find useful:
The Simple Power of Showing Up - This is the full text article from the quote I shared above. In it, Awosika, talks about how to become more consistent and thus successful at just about anything. It made me think hard about gaps in daily leadership practices and what I might need to start doing more consistently if I intend to reach my long-term strategic goals.

The Leadership Journey of Abraham Lincoln - This has some great historical insights behind Lincoln’s leadership on discipline, focus, and transformation. I found the description about loneliness at the top especially relevant for how we can sometimes feel standing at the top of the districts we serve. The author, Nancy Koehn is a historian and professor at the Harvard Business School and has spent a career studying effective leadership, looking at examples, past and present.

Not So Undercover Supe - Scott Bailey, DA Leadership Institute member and the superintendent of Desert Sands Unified School District in California, stars in this fun video that puts the spotlight on the hard-working staff who keep his district running and support student success. This reminds me that YouTube and other social media offer so many creative ways for students, staff, and administrators to work together to showcase what we’re accomplishing in our districts.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" 28-Trombone Collaboration! – In the spirit of the new movie just released, this brought a smile to my face. If you watch to the end you will see the brains behind this composition and the passion he has for what he does. Who are the passionate people like him that you have on your teams?
I would love to hear from you, so remember to share something that’s inspiring you right now. Also, if you know someone who would appreciate receiving this newsletter and you want me to add them to the mailing list, please reply to this email.
Warm regards,
